National School, Dublin, Ireland
Elizabeth O’Rourke
KEEPS art project in Dublin took place in a national school (state run), with children in senior infants class (six year olds). The school is funded by the government but run by a board of governors made up of parents. It’s a multi-denominational school with a mixture of students from all backgrounds and socio-economic groups. In this class there was a child from China, England, and Spain.
The school is a mainstream one but there are children in the class from what are deemed disadvantaged backgrounds. I figured that the key to art with six year olds would be newspaper, so I basically re-upholstered the entire room with the Sunday Times. But creativity won out. We painted canvasses, carpet and just a little bit of wall. The children were quite young, some of them just wanted to paint a nice picture of flowers or ladies so it took a while to explain the significance of the question. They really enjoyed the day. They were full of questions about the other children who would be participating. We found Africa, China and India on the globe and talked about the different places they had all been on holidays.
Bhi an lá ar fheadhas an craic go deo. Go raibh maith agat KEEPS.
