Estero Padre Ramos, Nicaragua
Natasha Calderwood
Estero Padre Ramos is a small fishing village on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast. It is home to 126 families who all live a very basic life and form a close community. The village has one school which has spaces to teach 120 children, leaving many children without the opportunity to learn. No art is taught in the school, and they have no opportunity to express themselves creatively and are expected to work from the age they can hold a fishing net. Although we had only enough canvases four children to paint on, we had all the children round and had paints and paper for all of them to have the opportunity to paint what was important to them.
